in what could be a major problem for those who work at home in cities across the nation. These politicians want to use zoning power to raise revenues by licensing and taxing home-based businesses." He added, "The proposed new zoning ordinances in Chicago and Los Angeles add unnecessary restrictions to home office workers and would tax unfairly home-based businesses."

The HOAA began receiving numerous calls this month from members seeking support against these pending zoning rule changes in two of the nation's largest cities.

"Our phones have been ringing off the hook from members in Chicago and Los Angeles asking for help," stated Ekstract. "These small businesses apparently were presumed vulnerable because local politicians thought they had no national or local representation. They were wrong -- home office entrepreneurs now have an association to help them fight back. The HOAA is working to ensure that home-based businesses are accorded the same basic rights and privileges as larger businesses."

The HOAA is also undertaking to amend federal government guidelines guidelines,

for two issues of vital importance for home office workers -- home office expenses and health insurance deductions. For this purpose, HOAA has retained the services of one of the nation's largest legal and lobbying firms.

Technological innovation has allowed millions of workers to telecommute See telecommuting.  and develop home-based businesses. All too often, these businesses find themselves in violation of local zoning ordinances. There is a need for local zoning changes says the HOAA, but for positive changes -- not punitive regulations.
