Headquartered in Vinings, just outside Atlanta in unincorporated Cobb County, Georgia, Home Depot employs more than 355,000 people and operates 2,164 big-box Inc. is setting its sights on an 11.5-acre property in west Eugene. Boyles and his father acquired the Movieland site more than a year ago in a land swap with Eugene real estate firm Arlie & Co. In that swap, the Boyles family gave Arlie 36 acres of land in the Gateway area that Arlie later packaged with other land and sold to PeaceHealth for its new RiverBend hospital. The Movieland site is the biggest piece of largely vacant commercial property in west Eugene. A new Home Depot store in west Eugene would compete directly with the Jerry's store at Belt Line and Highway 99. Jerry's is one of the largest independently owned hardware stores in the nation. A Seneca Road Home Depot would also draw business from smaller hardware stores. Two years ago, Jerry's was at the forefront of the fight to prevent Home Depot from winning land-use approval to build the store on Marcola Road in Springfield.
