 - Police say alcohol may have been a contributing factor in a traffic accident on Highway 126 on Friday that killed one person and left three others, including an infant, with life-threatening injuries as the busy Memorial Day weekend got under way.

A fifth motorist suffered a broken ankle in the four-vehicle, head-on crash, police said.

and a red convertible were among the four cars involved in the accident.

"Two of the cars looked liked they'd been through a compactor," King said.

The accident occurred at 7:23 p.m. as Springfield police and other law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. The crash briefly closed the eastbound lanes of Highway 126 between Mohawk and 42nd. Later, eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane for several hours. Westbound traffic was detoured at 42nd Street to Marcola Road and back to the freeway at Mohawk Boulevard.

Westbound lanes were expected to be closed for four to five hours as accident reconstruction specialists investigated the crash, King said.

"Our preliminary investigation with witness statements indicates that excessive speed and the Chrysler's maneuvering through traffic caused the car to fish tail," King said.

Investigators are requesting that anyone who may have seen the Chrysler before the time of the accident call Springfield police at 726-3714.
