Relying chiefly on book learning: young man, living with a family struggling to survive an economic downturn and racial tension in the Virgin Islands, Gantos finds little support for his literary aspirations. He takes a chance to get money for college by smuggling smuggling, illegal transport across state or national boundaries of goods or persons liable to customs or to prohibition. Smuggling has been carried on in nearly all nations and has occasionally been adopted as an instrument of national policy, as by Great Britain drugs. To import or export without paying lawful customs charges or duties. 2. To bring in or take out illicitly or by stealth. it out--for shame. Also, prison sentences for dealing and using drugs are much longer and more punishing now than 30 years ago. I work with inmates serving 10 years and more for handling a fraction of what Gantos got his year in federal prison for handling. He was a lucky young man. Nancy C.
