The lapse ratio for ordinary life policies decreased to 7.6 in 2000, down from 8.3 in 1999. Mutual organizations, which usually have lower lapse ratios, saw an even larger improvement last year, decreasing to 5.6 from 6.9. The lapse ratio compares the number of life insurance policies lapsed LEGACY, LAPSED. Industry experts believe the downturn in the equity markets is making people less inclined to let policies lapse. The sales increase and improved lapse ratios are the result, in part, of agents doing a better job of educating clients about the features and benefits of life insurance. "We've we've Contraction of we have. we've have always championed the cash value in life policies, because it helps many people in many different ways. Fact is, the cash value in a policy provides solid returns and is a worthwhile feature and component of any savings program," Dolan said. Agents are convincing customers that life policies should be held long term, he said. The decline in lapse ratios is a trend Dolan believes will continue as the importance of a life policy's cash value grows clearer each day. Average policy issued increased to $131,576 from $111,883, which is also a reflection of the performance of the equity markets. "The decline in the markets will make products such as whole life--which were always attractive because of their cash value--look more so," Dolan said. Again, mutual organizations saw the greatest improvement, with a 27.3% increase in average policy size. Renewal premium persistency rates--at 83.2 in 2000--remained on par with reported levels since 1996.
