Hofstra University breaks ground on new $23m graduate hall.


Institutions such as Hofstra University Hofstra University (hŏf`strə, hôf`–), at Hempstead, N.Y.; coeducational. Founded as a division of New York Univ. in 1935, it became independent in 1940, and its name was changed to Hofstra College.  are seeing the need for new college facilities to accommodate the growing number of students enrolling from across the country.

To help ease the housing crunch, Hofstra broke ground in September on a $23 million residential building for graduate students in the School of Law.

The ceremony was held on the North Campus of Hofstra, the largest private university on Long Island. When complete in January 2008, the Graduate Residence Hall will be a 5-story, 79,950 s/f facility featuring 58 furnished fur·nish

 residential suites that will house approximately 225 graduate students. The new residence hall will be located between the Constitution and Alliance Halls on the North Campus where currently where academic and administrative facilities are housed.

Near the residence hall, a new pedestrian bridge already under construction will cross over the Hempstead Turnpike turnpike, road paid for partly or wholly by fees collected from travelers at tollgates. It derives its name from the hinged bar that prevented passage through such a gate until the toll was paid. See also road. .
