"The program is all about helping Maine businesses grow," said Governor Baldacci. "I am pleased that the program will help Hodgdon move forward with its growth strategy."

The Governor introduced the program, an aggressive incentive package structured to bring jobs and new business to Maine, in February 2004. As a result, 2,800 jobs are being created and business growth is taking place throughout the state.

Hodgdon, which currently employs 76 people, plans on adding up to 25 new jobs as part of its long-term Long-term

growth strategy, which includes a contract with the U.S. Navy to design and build a composite high-speed prototype vessel. With the support of Maine's Federal Delegation, the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Maine Technology Institute, Hodgdon secured a $1 million contract in 2004 to design the hull and received a second contract in 2005 to start construction of the prototype. Successful completion of the project will make Hodgdon a very competitive candidate in bidding for a contract to construct the additional boats in 2007.

The company has also completed a $100,000 renovation on an existing building where the development and testing program is now underway. This building will support the prototype hull construction in the fall. Additional improvements to the yard's facilities are also underway.

Tim Hodgdon said, "This program is a great opportunity for this company and the state's marine industry in general. The support we have received from both the governor's office and our federal delegation demonstrates what shipbuilding means to Maine."

Boat building represents a growing business sector in Maine. Annual industry sales top $650 million, and approximately 450 companies are tied to the industry. Industry representatives estimate that Maine boat sales could increase to more than $1 billion over the next 10 years. The State is working to facilitate this growth through a partnership with MBB.

Hodgdon has built more than 400 vessels in Maine since the launching of its first boat in 1816.
