The act or process of bringing a lawsuit in and of itself; a judicial contest; any dispute. When a person begins a civil lawsuit, the person enters into a process called litigation. Reform Act Hock v. Thipedeau, 238 F.Supp.2d 446 (D.Conn. 2002). A state inmate filed a [section] 1983 action against a prison official alleging her Eighth Amendment rights had been violated. A district court jury entered a verdict in favor of the inmate and the official asked the court to set aside the verdict. The district court denied the motion, finding that the inmate had exhausted her administrative remedies before filing suit, and that the inmate was not precluded from recovering nominal and punitive damages even though she had no physical injury. The court held that the Civil Rights of Institutionalized in·sti·tu·tion·al·ize tr.v. in·sti·tu·tion·al·ized, in·sti·tu·tion·al·iz·ing, in·sti·tu·tion·al·iz·es 1. a. To make into, treat as, or give the character of an institution to. b. Persons Act (CRIPA CRIPA Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act of 1980 ) does not limit the availability of nominal or punitive damages for violation of a constitutional right.
