Hitachi and Microsoft Verify Most Powerful Embedded RISC Processor Ever for the Windows CE Platform.

BRISBANE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1998--Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. today announced that the SH7750 -- its highest-performance SuperH(TM) embedded RISC processor RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution.  and a key component of forthcoming portable and communication products -- is compatible with the Microsoft Windows See Windows.

"Today's announcement means that developers and consumers of Windows CE-based products have more powerful and verified compatible silicon to work with than ever before," said Franklin Fite, director of the Windows CE product group at Microsoft. "Fast, energy-efficient processors such as Hitachi's SH7750 will help expand the range of features and functions available in Windows CE-based devices."

The SH7750, the Cool Engine Inside(TM), is the first member of Hitachi's SH-4 series. It is also the latest addition to the Windows CE-compatible SuperH family of processors which includes the SH-3 series. The SH7750 is able to process at the rate of 360 million instructions per second Noun 1. million instructions per second - (computer science) a unit for measuring the execution speed of a computer's CPU (but not the whole system); "4 MIPS is 4,000,000 instructions per second"

Despite its speed, the SH7750 also features low power consumption, making it flexible enough to use in a range of multimedia products such as handheld PCs, set-top boxes and car navigation systems. The SH7750's speed extends its application to network modem, portable communication and thin client products.

Hitachi customer Qubit Technology is developing high bandwidth Internet appliances based on the Windows CE operating system. "The SH-4 is enabling us to achieve exceptional performance at a value price point and develop a device which targets this emerging market," said David Armitage, president of Qubit. "Fast access to the Internet places a considerable burden on the CPU CPU
