the fast ramp of small form factor (SFF (Small Form Factor) Refers to a device that is smaller than others in its field. For example, a miniature display on a cellphone is an SFF device because displays can be extremely large on monitors and TVs by comparison. See form factor. ) enterprise hard drives in 2007, Hitachi announced today it has shipped the Ultrastar[R] C10K147 hard drive, the company's first SFF enterprise product. The 10,000 RPM Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive was developed specifically for high-performance and low-power requirements of servers, delivering up to 147GB1 of capacity and 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI See SAS.  (SAS (1) (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, www.sas.com) A software company that specializes in data warehousing and decision support software based on the SAS System. With the Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive, Hitachi expands its enterprise segment participation with a broad and expanded portfolio. Along with the SFF hard drive, Hitachi's portfolio includes the 15,000 RPM 3.5" Ultrastar 15K300 and 10,000 RPM 3.5-inch Ultrastar 10K300 hard drives for mission-critical storage and the 7,200 RPM 3.5-inch Ultrastar A7K1000 one-terabyte hard drive for lower duty-cycle enterprise applications. All three products are shipping now.

Space, Power Requirements Drive Small Form Factor Transition

Enterprise customers are increasingly seeking solutions to reduce space and power requirements in data centers. Coupled with a new interest in establishing government mandates for "green" data centers, a transition to small form factor hard drives from the traditional 3.5" drives previously used in servers is gaining a new sense of urgency. 2007 has been predicted by industry analysts as a turning point in the volume ramp of small form factor enterprise hard drives.

The Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive provides a 50 percent smaller foot print and a 40 percent reduction in z-height over traditional enterprise hard drives. This compact size provides optimal space and power efficiencies while still delivering high performance with 10,000 RPM spin speed, high-speed SAS interface and 16MB data buffer In computing, a buffer is a region of memory used to temporarily hold data while it is being moved from one place to another. Typically, the data is stored in a buffer as it is retrieved from an input device (such as a keyboard) or just before it is sent to an output device (such . These features combine to make the Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive ideally suited for blade servers A server architecture that houses multiple server modules ("blades") in a single chassis. It is widely used in datacenters to save space and improve system management. Either self-standing or rack mounted, the chassis provides the power supply, and each blade has its own CPU, memory and  and 1U and 2U rack-mounted servers See rack server.  for mission-critical applications.

"With volume availability of our Ultrastar C10K147, we have delivered on our expanded 2007 enterprise product portfolio. The introduction of a small form factor enterprise hard drive and our milestone one-terabyte drive add depth to our enterprise HDD (Hard Disk Drive) See hard disk and HDD caddy.
