Hitachi Introduces Three Embedded Flash Microcontrollers Targeting High-End Motor Control and Consumer Applications.BRISBANE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1998-- Marriage of 256KB embedded Flash with new SH-DSP core delivers high performance and increased design flexibility Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. today made significant additions to its SuperH RISC RISC in full Reduced Instruction Set Computing Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. RISC became popular in microprocessors in the 1980s. series with the introduction of three new microcontrollers (MCUs) -- the SH7065F, SH7410F and SH7017F. The new SH7065F and SH7410F have an SH-DSP core that combines the functionality of a RISC processor and a digital signal processor A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor designed specifically for digital signal processing, generally in real-time computing. "Marrying 256KB of on-chip Flash with a 60MHz SH-DSP delivers an unprecedented level of performance and design versatility," said Dan Mansur, group product marketing manager for Hitachi. "In addition to the flexibility of embedded Flash, the CPU CPU in full central processing unit Principal component of a digital computer, composed of a control unit, an instruction-decoding unit, and an arithmetic-logic unit. core can execute instructions in a single cycle, significantly improving performance." Hitachi has one of the broadest, most diverse lines of embedded controllers in the industry and today is the world's No. 2 supplier of MCUs, according to market research firm In-Stat. SH7065F for Motor Control The SH7065F provides a solution for industrial motor control applications that require high precision and high performance. The SH7065F delivers robust performance and flexibility through the combination of a 60MHz SH-DSP core, 256KB of eFlash and 8KB of X/Y RAM. For instance, the SH7065F is able to execute many instructions such as Multiply/Accumulate in a single cycle, which speeds processing of algorithms and improves motor control precision. With its large-capacity eFlash memory, the SH7065F can hold larger, more complex code, enabling the SH7065F to be a single chip motor controller. Large capacity Flash also allows products to be custom-configured at the customer site for local languages. The new MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. See microcontroller. (2) (Multipoint Control Unit) A device that is used to moderate a videoconference of three or more end points (users at computers or groups of users has a rich array of peripherals including timers optimized for use in motor control applications. The SH7065F features a 6-channel, 16-bit Timer Pulse Unit (TPU TPU - Text Processing Utility ) and a 16-bit Motor Management Timer (MMT MMT Million Metric Tons MMT Médecins Maîtres-Toile MMT Methadone Maintenance Treatment MMT Multiple Mirror Telescope MMT Mission Management Team (International Space Station) MMT Military Training Technology ). The timers are designed to generate 3-phase, complementary positive and negative non-overlapping PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a outputs with automatic dead time inserted for driving AC motors. The SH7065F also has high current PWM outputs of 15mA for driving photo couplers directly, and a mechanism for tri-stating PWM outputs which helps protect the motor during fault conditions. These sophisticated timing features are a requirement in many high-end industrial control designs. Other SH7065F peripherals include an 8-channel, 10-bit A/D converter, used to digitize motor speed and position information for the MCU's 2-phase encoder. SH7410F for Communications, Consumer Electronics The SH7410F is based on the same 40MHz SH-DSP core architecture as its predecessor, the SH7410, but also includes 48KB of eFlash memory. It incorporates the same high-speed, digital signal processor as the SH7410 for use in communications and consumer electronics applications and a broad set of on-board peripherals. SH7017F for Cost-Sensitive Computing and Industrial Applications The SH7017F is based on the same 28.7MHz SH-2 architecture as Hitachi's existing SH7045 series but was designed specifically for use in applications where cost savings are critical, such as consumer hard disk drive and printer designs, and certain industrial implementations. It includes 128KB of eFlash memory and a suite of on-board peripherals, designed to deliver precisely the right level of performance and functions for price-sensitive customers. Peripherals include 2-channel DMAC DMAC Direct Memory Access Controller DMAC Data Management and Communications DMAC N,N-Dimethylacetamide DMAC Downtown Media Arts Center (Orlando, Florida) DMAC Direct Memory Access Control DMAC Direct Machining and Control , 5-channel TPU, a serial communications interface Serial Communications Interface - UART , and A/D converter. Price and Availability Sample price for the new MCUs is $30 in quantities of 10,000. Part number for the SH7065F is HD64F7065F, the SH7410F part number is HD64F7410F and the SH7017F part number is HD64F7017F. Samples of these devices will be available in the fourth quarter of 1998.
