Hitachi Introduces New Microcontroller With Embedded Flash and CAN For Automotive and Industrial Control Applications.BRISBANE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998-- New H8S Features Largest Embedded Flash Memory Of Any 16-Bit Device Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. today unveiled a new microcontroller (MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. See microcontroller. (2) (Multipoint Control Unit) A device that is used to moderate a videoconference of three or more end points (users at computers or groups of users ) that features embedded Flash (eFlash) memory for design and manufacturing flexibility, and supports the CAN (controller area network) serial interface, a popular communications standard for rugged operating environments. With 256KB of eFlash, the H8S/2623F has the highest-capacity eFlash memory of any 16-bit MCU on the market. The new MCU also features 12KB of embedded RAM, the largest on-chip RAM capacity in Hitachi's H8 product line, an 8- and 16-bit family of general-purpose CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) Pronounced "sisk." The traditional architecture of a computer which uses microcode to execute very comprehensive instructions. microcontrollers. The large eFlash and RAM capacities allow the new MCU to run more sophisticated and complex application programs. Other key features of the H8S/2623F include 16 channels of A/D A/D See advance-decline line (A/D). (analog-to-digital) conversion for applications requiring numerous peripheral and control options, and an integrated PLL PLL - phase-locked loop (phase-locked loop) circuit that supports clock-doubling and increases the MCU's performance. "This combination of features and performance demonstrates our effort to lead the migration to embedded Flash memory," said Dan Mansur, group product marketing manager for Hitachi. "We expect automotive and industrial control customers to leverage the H8S/2623F's unique features and performance in their next-generation designs, and to pass along the benefits of Flash memory to the end-users of their products." Support for CAN Communications CAN is an increasingly important and popular protocol for managing data flow among various automotive and industrial control components and subsystems. Compared to other communications interfaces for similar control applications, CAN requires fewer wires running through a system and can help designers achieve up to a 90% reduction in wiring requirements; utilizes short connections to electrical noise-sensitive analog sensors before the signals are converted to digital noise-insensitive; enables application and system flexibility because functional units (or nodes) can be added or removed simply; simplifies maintenance, test and development; and provides a network architecture well-suited for project-oriented development work. CAN-based systems enjoy higher data throughput from fast closed-loop, real-time performance. They also promote system reliability and operator safety through strong error-checking capability. CAN-bus systems simplify the process of getting data from remote locations within networks and incorporate added diagnostic capabilities for the system nodes in case of malfunction. In automotive applications, CAN solutions can control and enhance functionality in vehicle body control electronics (such as power steering and suspension control), instrumentation, and power train electronics (such as the transmission and distributorless ignition). In industrial control applications, CAN controllers enable factory automation machine control, motion control, product line manufacturing control, and a host of other intelligent machine applications. Key Features and Peripherals Hitachi's new H8S/2623F is based on the high-performance H8S/2000 CPU CPU in full central processing unit Principal component of a digital computer, composed of a control unit, an instruction-decoding unit, and an arithmetic-logic unit. core which incorporates a 16 bit by 16 bit (4 states) multiplier. In addition, the new MCU features a DTC DTC See: Depository Transfer Check DTC See: Depository Trust Company DTC See Depository Trust Company (DTC). (data transfer controller) that can be activated by internal interrupt or by software, a watch dog timer and a 10 bit, 16 channel A/D converter. The H8S/2623F also features a 16-bit Timer Pulse Unit (TPU TPU - Text Processing Utility ) with 6 channels and a 16-bit timer, a programmable pulse generator (PPG PPG Points Per Game (basketball player statistic) PPG Power Play Goals (hockey) PPG Planning Policy Guidance (UK) PPG Programmable Pulse Generator PPG Power Puff Girls ) with a maximum 16-bit pulse output, and 5V interface I/O ports with 54 I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output pins and 16 input only pins. It has 3 serial communication interface (SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. It can transfer data up to 1GBytes/sec. (hardware) SCI - 1. Scalable Coherent Interface. 2. UART. ) channels that are synchronous- or asynchronous-mode selectable and a smart card interface. Finally, the new MCU has an interrupt controller with eight priority levels and seven external interrupt pins (NMI (NonMaskable Interrupt) A high-priority interrupt that cannot be disabled by another interrupt. It is used to report malfunctions such as parity, bus and math coprocessor errors. NMI - Non-Maskable Interrupt , IRQ (Interrupt ReQuest) A hardware interrupt on a PC. There are 16 IRQ lines used to signal the CPU that a peripheral event has started or terminated. Except for PCI devices, two devices cannot use the same line. 0 to IRQ5), a variety of power saving modes, and a clock-doubling PLL circuit. Hitachi's CAN implementation incorporates one channel functionality and features corresponding to CAN version 2.0B active supporting both standard and extended CAN protocols. The CAN interface features fifteen selectable transmit/receive buffers and one receive only buffer. Two selectable transmission methods are allowed: mailbox priority transmission or transmit by identifier value. Finally, Hitachi's CAN solution allows for independent interrupt vectors: message receive, message transmit successful, error (overload warning, error passive, bus off), and others (such as message overwrite (1) A data entry mode that writes over existing characters on screen when new characters are typed in. Contrast with insert mode. (2) To record new data on top of existing data such as when a disk record or file is updated. , remote frame, and overload frame.) Price and Availability The H8S/2623F (Hitachi part No. HD64F2623F) comes in a 100 pin plastic QFP (Quad FlatPack) A square, surface mount chip package that has leads on all four sides and comes in several varieties. PQFP (Plastic QFP) may refer to all of the following QFP types. All quad flatpacks use gull-wing leads, except for the CQFP, which stick straight out. package and will begin sampling in the first quarter of 1999.
