Hitachi Develops Innovative PET Device Using Semiconductor Detectors.Tokyo, Japan, Oct 5, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Hitachi (TSE See Tokyo Stock Exchange. TSE 1. See Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). 2. See Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE). : 6501) announced on September 28 that it has developed a prototype of its new positron emission tomography positron emission tomography: see PET scan. positron emission tomography (PET) Imaging technique used in diagnosis and biomedical research. (PET) device using semiconductor detectors. The newly-developed device, which features multiple semiconductor detectors and an exclusive IC for high-speed processing, can achieve high-precision imaging with a gamma-ray energy resolution of less than 6% and image spatial resolution (Data West Research Agency definition: see GIS glossary.) A measure of the accuracy or detail of a graphic display, expressed as dots per inch, pixels per line, lines per millimeter, etc. It is a measure of how fine an image is, usually expressed in dots per inch (dpi). of less than 3mm. Accordingly, the device can detect and quantitatively measure minute lesions that are hardly detectable with the conventional PET device. In the recent mice experiment co-conducted with Hokkaido University, the company has succeeded in imaging a minute tumor with a diameter of 3mm. Going forward, Hitachi will proceed with further research with a view to commercializing it at the earliest date as possible.
