Hitachi America Introduces 14.1-Inch Super TFT LCD.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997--

Wide Viewing Angle on a Par With Conventional CRTs

Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., Japan (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:HIT), today announced that it will be showing a 14.1-inch thin film transistor (TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

) liquid-crystal display (LCD) at Comdex that employs its patented wide-viewing-angle super TFT technology, which overcomes a major drawback of conventional TFT LCDs.

The 14.1-inch TFT LCD has XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. XGA-2 later added non-interlaced 1,024x768x64K.  resolution (1024 X 768) and provides a vertical and horizontal viewing angle of 140 degrees - far wider than that of conventional displays, which are restricted to about 140 degrees vertically and 90 degrees horizontally.

In a conventional TFT display, two layers of substrates are set crosswise to each other and separated by strandlike liquid crystals, which are twisted through 90 degrees.

Transparent electrodes on each substrate are used to apply an electrical field to untwist un·twist

the crystal molecules. However, when the molecular orientation is not fully perpendicular to the substrates, the viewing angle is restricted to about 40 degrees vertically and 90 degrees horizontally. This causes the contrast and color to vary depending on the angle from which the screen is viewed, a problem that has been accentuated as LCDs have become larger and able to display more colors.

With Hitachi's super TFT, electrodes on the lower substrate are used to apply an electrical field that imparts a horizontal orientation to the liquid crystals, ensuring that the plane of crystal rotation is parallel to the substrate plane. The result is a display that stays bright and clear over a wide range of viewing angles.

Hitachi America, Ltd., Flat Panel Displays A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  Division, is a leading supplier of liquid crystal, thin-film transistor (TFT) and poly-silicon flat panel displays.

PRODUCT FEATURES

1/ Wide viewing angle

Clarity and minimal color variation are provided over a much wider range of vertical and horizontal viewing angles than was possible with previous TFT displays. The result is picture quality on a par with that of a CRT (1) (C RunTime) See runtime library.

(2) (Cathode Ray Tube) A vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer monitor or TV. The viewing end of the tube is coated with phosphors, which emit light when struck by electrons.
.

2/ Lightness and compactness

The TFT display has an effective display area that is virtually the same as that of a commercial 15-inch CRT, but occupies one fiftieth the volume, and it weighs just 1400 grams.

3/ Brightness with low power consumption

The TFT display has a power consumption of just 16 watts, less than one-quarter the 85 watts of a 15-inch CRT monitor. At the same time the TFT display provides a standard brightness of 200 cd/m2, making it ideal for reproducing clear video images for multimedia applications.

4/ Low reflection screen

Display visibility is enhanced by the incorporation of a black matrix color filter Color filter

An optical element that partially absorbs incident radiation, often called an absorption filter. The absorption is selective with respect to wavelength, or color, limiting the colors that are transmitted by limiting those that are absorbed.
to prevent ambient light reflecting off the screen.

5/ RGB (Red Green Blue) The computer's native color space, which is the color system for capturing and displaying images. RGB was derived from our own perception of color because human eyes are sensitive to red, green and blue (see trichromaticity).  interface

By incorporating a newly developed RGB interface, the display can be directly connected to personal computers and other office automation equipment.

6/ Hi-Contrast and Fast Response

With a 200:1 contrast ratio, deep color Refers to pixels with a bit depth (color depth) greater than 24 bits. See pixel and HDMI.  saturation, and 55 ms total response, the super TFT is a true CRT replacement.
