The Grapes of Wrath, a novel by this American author, dramatized the plight of the Oakies who fled the Dust Bowl for California in the 1930s. The novel tells the story of the Joad family, who lose their farm in Oklahoma and journey to California to find a new life. It tells of poverty and hardship and prejudice, but also of the triumph of the human spirit. The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. This author also won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, six years before he died. Some of his other books are Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and The Winter of Our Discontent.
