History and culture in the making: a photo essay.


The closet doors have opened in some places. Standing just outside these closet doors, I have had the opportunity to photograph gay life in the studio, in the streets and in the woods. These photos show a life that celebrates itself, mocks the constraints and illusions of heterosexist hegemony and fights for its rights to simply be.  activists, shamanic healers, AIDS activists, Radical Faeries Radical Faeries are a loosely affiliated international group of mostly gay men and mostly counterculture pagans. Started in California, it has spread throughout the world over the past several decades, seemingly, as an echo community of the gay rights movement. , butches and femmes, gay male nuns, and fierce gay youth in the multifaceted world of the gay community. Welcome to my world. It is a place that is rich with history and culture in the making.

KEITH GEMEREK taught for over ten years at the Cause School, an ungraded and open-classroom, independent school in Buffalo. He started photography as a historian, researching the Buffalo Photo-Pictorialists and the beginnings of photography as an art form. His own photo-work has taken him all over the world with the late Yvar Mikhashoff, a modern pianist and composer, making portraits of contemporary composers. Some of this work is in the permanent collection of the Burchfield Art Center in Buffalo, and at CEPA CEPA Canadian Environmental Protection Act
