Historic conference of Ukrainian Catholic Church.


Winnipeg--The Ukrainian Catholic Church had an historic three-day Conference in Winnipeg on May 24-26 of this year in which all Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada, over 250 priests and deacons, many religious, and a few dozen wives of priests (who had their own session) were gathered. It was only the second time in the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church that such a Conference was convened. The first time was in 1962.

However, last year, the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church voted to have one of its four meetings in Winnipeg, the city of the Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan of Canada, Michael Bzdel. It was the first time that Canada ever hosted a meeting of the Permanent Synod. For that reason it was decided to organise a Conference to run concurrently for all the Ukrainian Catholic clergy in Canada.

The participants and organiser judged the Conference to be a great success. Reflecting upon the Conference, Bishop David said: "This meeting was historical. It was the first time in 40 years that our church leaders met to discuss the future of our Church in Canada. We gathered in prayer, in unity, in dialogue, to reflect the vocation and mission of our Church in Canada." Bishop David also mentioned that the highlight of the Conference for him was "the spiritual excitement of the participants' willingness to take upon themselves the challenge of exploring evangelisation, that is, welcoming all people of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian descent to become active members of our church in Canada."
