Historic Astoria to Host Journey's End National Art Exhibition; Juried Art Inspired By Lewis And Clark Displayed with National Signature Event.

WHAT: Art inspired by the journey of Lewis and Clark will be on
display in Astoria, Ore., this fall as part of the Lewis and
          Clark Bicentennial Commemoration Signature Event
"Destination: The Pacific," one of 15 nationally sanctioned
events taking place along the Lewis and Clark trail. The
Journey's End National Art Exhibition, a national juried
fine art show, will feature the work of as many as 200
artists from across the nation. Inspired by the theme, "the
country through which you shall pass," a quote taken from
President Thomas Jefferson's written instructions to Lewis
and Clark, the art will be shown in two separate venues. All
pieces will be for sale. Organizers expect a wide range of
artistic interpretation of the land and people encountered
by the renowned expedition, expressed in paintings,
sculpture, mixed media and photography. Entries will be
judged by internationally known sculptor and painter,
Stanley Wanlass. Awards total $15,000, including a $10,000
          best of show prize.

VISUALS: Winning art from the 2003 exhibition is featured on the
event Web sites at www.jsend.org and www.jenae.org.

WHO: The Journey's End National Art Exhibition is expected to
feature up to 50 juried-in entries in the Clatsop County
Heritage Museum. Additional artist submissions will be
featured at booths in Astoria's new Holiday Inn Express.
Judge Stanley Wanlass is best known for his bronze
sculptures and most recently a 20-foot tall bronze tree
installed in Long Beach, Wash., representing Clark's carving
of his initial into a coastal tree to mark the furthest
location traveled by the expedition. Wanlass, of Sandy,
Utah, is a former resident of Astoria, Ore., and has long
studied the historic Lewis and Clark expedition.
