Halyburton, a Southerner with Confederate connections, ejected and was taken prisoner. On October 22, Air Force Major Fred Vann Cherry, who entered the Air Force in 1951 and succeeded in overcoming the race barrier to achieve his rank, embarked on one last mission before being reassigned to the US. He was shot down about 15 miles northeast of Hanoi and taken prisoner. Cherry's injuries made him more vulnerable in captivity and the interrogators, knowing the race situation in the US, put Halyburton and Cherry in the same cell in Hoa Lo, called Hanoi Hilton by the prisoners. The idea was to cause them enough distress to break them. They spent seven months together of the seven and a half years of their captivity, creating a lifelong bond that does not recognize color. Overcoming initial suspicions, each credits the other with saving his life. This is a compelling and worthwhile story of courage and faith in the face of the hellishness of war--these men are true heroes. Hirsch also relates some of the controversy surrounding sur·round tr.v. sur·round·ed, sur·round·ing, sur·rounds 1. To extend on all sides of simultaneously; encircle. 2.
