--Family activities underscore the magnitude of the Forest Lawn Museum's ground-breaking exhibit, "Revolutions," featuring works by artists who defined musical culture visually as well as a special showing of "Taken By Storm: Album Art of Storm Thorgerson" A full schedule of interactive family fun including music, art, and celebration was announced today by Forest Lawn(R)-Glendale to complement the highly praised, one-of-a-kind art exhibit running through October 9th, "Revolutions." The free events, all to be held at Forest Lawn-Glendale, include Hip Hop Dance Hip hop dance refers to dance styles, mainly street dance styles, primarily danced to hip hop music, or that have evolved as a part of the hip hop culture. The first and original dance associated with hip hop is breakdance, which appeared in New York City during the early Class, Jazz Night, Create Your Own CD or Album Cover, Grandparent's Day Activity, Music Poster Design, and Karaoke Showcase. Hip Hop Dance Class
Date: Saturday, August 6th Time: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Move and groove to an afternoon of music and dance while learning
from a certified Hip Hop instructor. Designed for those 5 and older,
this class will teach you how to properly warm up, cool down and dance
as a group with a short dance routine. Wear clothes and shoes that
allow you to move comfortably as the class will be indoors on wooden
floors.
Jazz Night!
Date: Thursday, August 18th Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Garner Thomas, saxophonist and rising star will perform an evening
of cool jazz including tracks from his first international release,
"When You Hold Me," which features contemporary jazz music with
saxophone and vocals in an integrated style including funk, R & B, pop
and blues.
Thomas has been a "first choice" by leading performers including
Prince, Diane Schurr, Sammy Davis, Jr., Stephanie Mills, Gregory
Hines, The Temptations, The 4 Tops and Little Richard, just to name a
few. A master entertainer and musician, he thrills audiences with his
sounds and talents - he often plays two saxes at one time or showcases
his circular breathing skills a la Kenny G. Thomas has been warmly
embraced by audiences at Seattle's KOOL Jazz Festival, Queen Mary Jazz
Festival, Festival International and other performances on three
continents.
Create Your Own CD or Album Cover
Date: Saturday, August 20th Time: 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Creating covers for music albums is a big, creative business. Come
showcase your talent as an artist for the music biz. Use your
imagination to create an innovative new CD or album cover for your
favorite band. Who knows? This might be the start of a new and
exciting career! (Ages 5 and up.)
Grandparent's Day Fun
Date: Saturday, September 10th Time: 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
We know how important Grandparents are to a family and want to
show them our appreciation. Join us to create a pin for Grandma or
Grandpa to wear proudly for Grandparent's Day. Choose from a heart,
dove or lamb design to decorate. (Ages 5 and up.)
Music Poster Activity
Date: Sunday, September 25th Time: 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Create your very own music poster under the direction of renowned
artist David Byrd. Many of Byrd's imaginative posters created
specially for the music industry are featured in the Forest Lawn
Museum's exhibit, "Revolutions." Byrd will teach you how to open up
your creativity through colored drawings so you can have your very own
hip poster to take home. (Ages 5 and up.)
Karaoke Fun
Date: Sunday, October 9th Time: 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Being a rock star is a dream most of us share - here is your
chance. Join fellow stars-to-be at an afternoon of joyful sounds
Karaoke-style. Bring lots of soul and a few friends to cheer you on as
you belt out your favorite tunes.
