Thursday announced the groundbreaking of the 253-room Hilton Garden Inn Hilton Garden Inn is the name of a chain of hotels operated by Hilton Hotels Corporation. Hilton Garden Inns are considered to be upscale, mid-priced hotels that are designed for both business and leisure travelers. The hotel brand is similar to that of the Courtyard by Marriott brand. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , located in downtown San Diego. The property is expected to open in the spring of 2000. The Hilton Garden Inn San Diego will be developed by S.D. Malkin Properties on behalf of S.D. Bridgeworks L.L.C. under a license agreement to be entered into with Hilton Inns Inc., the franchise subsidiary of Beverly Hills-based Hilton Hotels

The 12-story Hilton Garden Inn will feature a modified urban design to complement the architecture of many historic structures located in the famous Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. The multi-use project will include a variety of high-end restaurants, cafes and retail shops.
