For 2004, the NGA identified the hottest trends in national gardening that included flower gardening, bulb gardening, container gardening Container gardening is the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers or "pots", instead of planting them in the ground. In some cases, this method of growing is used for ornamental purposes. and vegetable gardening. Results were obtained through the annual National Gardening Survey performed by Harris Interactive Harris Interactive (NASDAQ: HPOL) is an American market research company that specializes in public opinion research using both telephone and surveys on online panels. Among his recommendations for the Hilton Garden Inn properties, Nardozzi will provide the hotels with tips on container gardening, currently one of the most popular gardening styles in the U.S. A key advantage to container gardening is that container gardens allow for beautiful gardens within very small spaces. Container gardens are simple to create, and can be designed to fit any budget. Here are some tips that the Hilton Garden Inn Chief Gardening Officer Charlie Nardozzi, is sharing with the hotels with restricted garden space(a):
Selecting Containers: When selecting a container, check the pots
for drainage holes. If using a decorative ceramic container
without holes, consider planting in a one-size smaller plastic pot
with drainage holes and placing it into ceramic container. When
growing in large-sized containers, utilize light-weight,
rubberized plastic containers with casters -- easier to move. To
water less frequently, plant in self-watering containers with a
water reservoir in the bottom. Then you can go away on a hot,
summer weekend without worrying about your garden.
Design Options: Let your imagination run wild when selecting
plants for your containers. Cascading plants along the edge and
taller plants growing in the center look great. Here are some
possible options: multi-colored canna lilies surrounded by white
bacopa and purple Wave petunias; salmon geraniums with blue
lobelia and white alyssum cascading over the pot edge; or
butterfly-attracting red nicotiana planted in a sea of blue
scaevola.
Planting in Containers: The keys to container planting success lie
in the soil and water. It's best to use fresh potting soil each
year. To reduce the amount of soil needed in large containers,
place a layer of packing peanuts or small plastic pots in the
bottom and fill the soil on top. Once planted, check the container
every few days for water needs. If you can stick your finger into
the soil and it's dry down to your knuckle, it's time to water.
Fertilizing Containers: Containers need extra fertility due to the
small amount and type of soil used. When planting, mix in
time-release fertilizer pellets. These pellets release nutrients
slowly into the soil every time you water. During the growing
season, add monthly doses of liquid fertilizer. Fertilize more
frequently if the leaves start to yellow.
