Hill hits two in Sheldon victory.

Byline: Jeff Smith The Register-Guard

Sheldon forward Loren Hill heard the skeptical whispers about his team after it opened the Midwestern League season with a scoreless tie against Churchill.

"People began doubting us," Hill said.

Hill did his part Thursday to erase such doubts by scoring two goals in fifth-ranked Sheldon's resounding re·sound

that improved its league mark to 2-0-1.

The Irish outshot the Highlanders 40-4 and received goals from six different players while first-team all-state goalie Garrett Staples recorded two saves for his fifth straight shutout and eighth in nine games.

But it was the early play of Hill that stole the show. The senior got Sheldon on the board in the ninth minute with a goal off a free kick from 35 yards out that curved left around a wall of defenders and then hooked into the right side of the net.

"I was just trying to catch the goalie off-guard with that one," Hill said.

As impressive as that goal was, Hill proceeded to catch his entire team off-guard with his next score.

Standing 18 yards away and with his back turned to the goal, Hill took a high volley and nailed a twisting left-footer past two nearby defenders and into the upper-right corner of the net.

"That was the best goal I've ever seen in high school," said seventh-year Sheldon coach Mac Wilson. "You just don't see those types of goals in high school. That was amazing."

Hill's 16th-minute goal followed a header from Denton Brown in the 13th minute to give the Irish a 3-0 halftime lead.

Jeff Masterson opened Sheldon's second-half scoring with a goal in the 56th minute, before the Irish reserves contributed four goals in the final eight minutes.
