Hiker, 46 trampled by cows.

A HIKER from Halifax who was trampled by cows on a day trip is in a 'critical' condition.

The man, aged 46, suffered life-threatening injuries yesterday after the incident in County Durham “Durham county” redirects here. For other uses, see Durham County.

His wife escaped without injuries.

But the man suffered a fractured skull, chest injuries and possible internal bleeding.

Air ambulance paramedics Jane Peacock said: "How he's got out alive I do not know. He's very, very sick."

Medics believe the man and his wife were visiting the area around Romaldkirk, Barnard Castle, on a day trip.

He was treated at the scene before a 12-minute flight to hospital, where he was admitted to a speciality treatment unit.

He is undergoing tests and will be moved to intensive care or a high dependency unit when doctors know the full extent of his injuries.
