Highlanders' undefeated journey tops list of the season's best.

Thirty years after Danny Ainge Daniel Ray Ainge (born March 17, 1959 in Eugene, Oregon, USA) is a former professional basketball and baseball player who played in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, and Phoenix Suns, and also in Major League Baseball for the Toronto Blue  led North Eugene to back-to-back state basketball titles, the Highlanders were champions again.

North Eugene's undefeated championship season tops the list of The Register-Guard's top 10 prep sports stories for the 2006-07 school year. North completed its perfect season with a 38-28 win over Roosevelt to win the OSAA OSAA Oregon School Activities Association

 Class 5A boys basketball title in front of a sold-out crowd at McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N.  in March.

Six-foot-eight junior post Brian Conklin led the Highlanders all season and earned state player of the year honors after averaging 19.6 points, 11.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Bill Wagner was named state coach of the year.

The Highlanders went 28-0 on the season, including a 15-0 mark in the Midwestern League.

North Eugene, ranked No. 1 all season, opened the tournament with a 79-41 win over Ashland and then beat second-ranked Corvallis 41-38 in the semifinals.

In the state final, Markus Baker made a 70-foot buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter to put the Highlanders ahead 26-21. Roosevelt closed within 30-28 midway through the fourth quarter before North Eugene scored the final eight points to set off a wild celebration.

"These kids built their own piece of history tonight," Wagner said after the victory.

2, Willamette wins all-MWL girls final

Willamette won its first state basketball title by defeating Churchill 45-29 in the 5A girls championship game at the Chiles Center The Earl A. Chiles Center is a 4,852-seat multi-purpose arena in Portland, Oregon, USA. The arena opened in 1984. It is home to the University of Portland Pilots basketball team. It hosted the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament in 1992 and 2007. . The Wolverines won two out of three games from the Lancers lanc·er

The Wolverines, making their first trip to state since 2004, were ranked fifth entering the tournament and opened with a 40-31 win over West Albany. Willamette stunned top-ranked Jefferson, 64-45, in the semifinals as Bellando scored 25 points and the Wolverines slowed down the Democrats, who averaged 87 points per game in the regular season.

3, Siuslaw football dominates

Siuslaw capped off an unbeaten season and brought the school its first outright football championship with a dramatic 21-14 overtime win over Sisters in the 4A final at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. .

The second-ranked Vikings took the lead in overtime when Kody Thrall scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Sisters faced a fourth-and-one at the 16-yard line on its possession, but record-setting running back Cory McCaffrey was stuffed for a four-yard loss as the Vikings celebrated their first title since sharing the championship with South Umpqua in 1981.

The title game was the only close call for the Vikings, who finished the season 13-0, including a 5-0 record to win the Far West League title. Siuslaw won each of its first 12 games by at least three touchdowns and did not allow more than 14 points in any game.

Siuslaw defeated Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery).  55-7 in the first round of the playoffs and then had its fourth shutout of the season in a 27-0 win over Central with the state quarterfinals. The Vikings beat Ontario 34-7 in the semis.

Tim Dodson was named state coach of the year while David Mesa, Luke Sims, Jordan Rainwater and Max Perry each earned all-state honors on both offense and defense.

4, Mohawk's dramatic title run

Mohawk survived a couple of close calls to win its third 1A boys basketball title in the past six years.

In the championship game against Damascus Christian, junior forward Danny Reiter made a half-court shot at the end of regulation to tie the game 50-50. Nick Johnston Nick Johnston (born 1948, Filey) is a Scottish politician. He was a Conservative & Unionist Member of the Scottish Parliament for Mid Scotland and Fife from 1999 until his ill-health induced resignation in August 2001.  made a three-pointer late in overtime to send the game into double overtime tied 58-58.

Damascus Christian took a 64-63 lead with 1:04 left to play before freshman Cord Wilkins made a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left for the victory.

Mohawk defeated Columbia Christian 59-58 in the semifinals when Brody Wilkins made the winning basket with 18 seconds remaining.

Reiter and Wilkins earned all-state honors while Bart Rothenberger was named state coach of the year. Mohawk finished the season 27-2, including a 19-1 mark to win the Mountain West League title.

5, McKenna caps perfect career

 senior Kelcy McKenna became the sixth girl in state history to win four straight state tennis titles when she defeated St. Mary's sophomore Casey Schein, 6-2, 6-0, at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club in the 4A/3A/2A/1A singles final. McKenna finished her prep career 88-0 and never lost a set at state.

6, Pac-10 looks at locals

At least a dozen local preps elected to continue their athletic career in the Pac-10.

Sheldon wide receiver Aaron Pflugrad and defensive lineman Bo Moos were among the top football recruits in the state. Pflugrad signed with Oregon and Moos signed with Arizona State.

Thurston's Erica Omlid and Sheldon's Kendra Little both signed to play women's golf at Oregon while Sheldon's Jack Dukeminier signed with the Oregon men's golf team.

Sheldon's Chris Vitus, Alex Besaw and Brandon Hayes all signed to play baseball at Oregon State along with Marist's Nick Stiltner. Sheldon's Casey Masterson will compete in track for the Beavers.

North Bend's Kelcy McKenna signed to play tennis at Arizona State.

Drew Wiley of McKenzie got the recruiting process out of the way early when the junior committed to play basketball at Oregon.

7, Marist tracks down boys title

Marist entered the final event of the Class 4A boys track and field championships trailing North Bend by seven points, but that was prime position for the Spartans, who had the state's best time in the 4x400 relay.

Marist went on to win the long relay in 3 minutes, 25.99 seconds to help the Spartans finish first with 62 points.

David Dillow, Michael Bellamy, Matt Hollander and Nate Dillow ran the final event to earn the title for the Spartans. Nate Dillow also won the 110 hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles while Hollander was second in the 800 and 1,500.

8, North Bend's best year

North Bend High School celebrated its 100th year and put together its greatest athletic season in school history with three team titles. In the previous 99 years, the Years, The

 school had won only two championships - in wrestling in 1979 and in girls basketball in 2005.

North Bend's boys cross country team won the 4A championship with 76 points. Spenser Lynass led the Bulldogs by finishing in second place.

North Bend's volleyball team avenged last year's title-game loss to Estacada by beating the Rangers 28-26, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21 in the 4A final. Kellie Holmstedt, the Far West League player of the year, had 42 kills in the championship match.

The Bulldogs added the 4A/3A/2A/1A girls swimming title in the winter with 64 points. Denise Green, who signed to compete at Boise State next year, won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and also helped the Bulldogs win the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay along with freshman Rachel Heaney, who added titles in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle.

Singler, who signed with Duke, scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half as South Medford won its first boys basketball title in school history by beating Lake Oswego Lake Os·we·go
