Highest paid public company CEOs: ranked by aggregate take-home compensation in 2005.


EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The top five highest paid executives on the Business Journal's list all earned over $11 million in aggregate take-home Adj. 1. take-home - (of salary or wages) remaining after all deductions including taxes
net, nett - remaining after all deductions; "net profit"
 compensation in 2005, with a vast difference of $130 million separating No. 1 and No. 5.

A notable change was Jay Gellert Jay Gellert (born 1956 in New York City, New York) is the current CEO and President of Health Net, Inc.  of Health Net Inc. who did not place in the top 25 last year but ranked No. 5 on this year's list. Eight other company leaders who were not among the top 25 in 2005 also landed on the 2006 list.

While two companies, Power-One Inc. and On Assignment Inc., reported net income losses in 2005, that performance did not preclude pre·clude

 their leaders, Steven Goldman Steven Goldman is a sports writer on baseball and a commentator on the New York Yankees and at times on the New York Mets. During the summer, he is a semiweekly baseball columnist for The New York Sun  and Peter T. Dameris, respectively, from making the list of highest paid CEOs. Indeed, company performance does not always directly correlate to the income of the chief executive. Consider that Kevin W. Sharer Kevin W. Sharer is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Amgen Inc. He also serves on the Board of 3M and Northrop-Grumman.

    
 ranked No. 3 in highest aggregate take-home earnings although the company he runs, Amgen, reported the highest net income of all the companies on the list.

THE PACESETTER

ANGELO R. MOZILO Angelo R. Mozilo is the chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Countrywide Financial. He is the son of a Bronx butcher. In 1969 he and David Loeb, who had already started a mortgage lending company, founded Countrywide Credit Industries in New York.

As the highest paid executive on the Business Journal's list, Mozilo's aggregate take-home in 2005 was almost $142 million. Countrywide's net income for 2005 was over $2.5 billion. The company recently announced that Mozilo will continue his role with Countrywide coun·try·wide

Other Long Term-Compensation includes benefits, typically pension
benefits paid by the company, as well as restricted stock grants and
long-term incentive plan payouts.

Total Company Compensation-Includes salary, bonus, other short term
compensation and other long-term compensation.

Options Exercised-Net dollar value realized from options exercised
during the year.

New Option Grants-Number of new options granted during the year.

Aggregate Take-Home-Sum of total company compensation and options
exercised. This is the total dollar value realized by the CEO during
the year.

Effectiveness Rating-Aggregate take-home divided by company net
income. This is a measure of what it cost shareholders, through cash
compensation, restricted stock grants and value granted through options
exercises, for financial performance for the year.

Only CEOs of public companies based in the greater SFV were included.

(1) Iger's compensation refers to his position as president of Walt
Disney Co. until October 1, 2005. Iger became president and chief
executive officer effective October 2, 2005.

(2) Goldman was CEO of Power-One until February 2006 and was
succeeded by William Yeates.
