Higher education iniatiative.Your article "Saving Our Young Black Hen" (Publisher's Page, January 2006) addresses what I have considered the single most important issue pacing higher education today. As president of Medgar Evers College Medgar Evers College (MEC) is a college campus (offering bachelor's and associate's degrees) of The City University of New York. MEC was founded in 1970 through cooperation from educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. of the City University of New York The City University of New York (CUNY; acronym: IPA pronunciation: [kjuni]), is the public university system of New York City. , I have made a lifetime commitment to reverse the trend of African American male underenrollment in higher education. In the fall 2003 semester, the male population at Medgar Evers was estimated at 22%, similar to the national average for historically and traditionally black colleges and universities. That same semester, MEC MEC Ministério da Educação (Ministry of Education) MEC Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (Spain: Ministry for Education and Science) MEC Mountain Equipment Co-Op created the Male Development and Empowerment Center to empower males through self development, personal growth, advocacy, and academic success. Through the center. MEC successfully increased its male population the following two academic semesters by an estimated 7%. In 2005, under the leadership of Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, the City University of New York created a university center to address issues pacing black men in the CUNY CUNY City University of New York master plan. Considering Medgar Evers' and CUNY's groundbreaking achievements, I am excited about the latent potential in every urban institution of higher education to save black men. I have resolved that the next leg of the journey is to galvanize gal·va·nize tr.v. gal·va·nized, gal·va·niz·ing, gal·va·niz·es 1. To stimulate or shock with an electric current. 2. support within the higher education community, inspiring other college presidents to follow our lead, start a center, and join us in transforming the lives of black men and the community.
