High School Comes to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

400 Washington High School Students To Explore the World

Of Biomedical Research

SEATTLE, April 17 /PRNewswire/ --

On Thursday, April 20, 400 high school students from around Washington State will participate in the Hutch High symposium, a half-day, hands-on science fair. The symposium is from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Lake Union campus.

The program includes interactive scientific activities as well as seminars on topics such as bone marrow transplantation, genetics, cancer prevention and laboratory techniques. During the hands-on activities each student will:

-- isolate and "spool" DNA

-- prepare microscope slides of dividing cells showing chromosomes

-- learn the fine art of micro-pipetting and the math behind it

-- separate various blood components and view them under microscopes

-- use an inverted flourescence microscope to view bone marrow cells that

turn green when infected with a virus (virus and cells will be dead)

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is dedicated to supporting science education. It focuses on fostering in students an interest in science and science-related careers. The goal of Hutch High is to give high school students exposure to scientists and to the cutting-edge research going on at the Hutchinson Center.
