High Output Drive DAC Reduces Digital Consumer Audio Cost.

SAN DIEGO & EDINBURGH, Scotland -- Wolfson Microelectronics plc (LSE LSE - Language Sensitive Editor :WLF) has added a new stereo audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC See D/A converter and discretionary access control.

) with a high output drive capability of 2V rms, eliminating the need for external op-amps in DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

, digital TV and audio/video receiver electronics.

The WM8521 integrates a digital interpolation interpolation

In mathematics, estimation of a value between two known data points. A simple example is calculating the mean (see mean, median, and mode) of two population counts made 10 years apart to estimate the population in the fifth year.
filter, multi-bit sigma-delta with dither, switched capacitor multi-bit stereo DAC and output smoothing filters combined with 2V rms outputs. This high-output capability reduces the bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  and design effort in equipment including DVD players, digital TVs, digital set top boxes, and A/V receivers allowing designers to achieve higher performance while minimizing build cost.

The multibit sigma-delta DAC design of the WM8521 includes integrated internal smoothing filters and includes noise shaping to allow 24-bit audio resolution to be met using non-critical analogue components. The switched capacitor design of the multibit stereo DAC maximizes clock-jitter tolerance and produces low out of band noise. This allows the external low-pass filter to be reduced to a simple RC pole or eliminated altogether.

The DAC is available in a 14-pin SOIC package, with three external pins for selection of audio input format, mute control and de-emphasis selection. The WM8521 supports up to 32-bit I2S, 16-bit right justified and 16-bit DSP audio formats, and is compatible with a range of industry standard microprocessors, controllers and DSPs. Audio performance specifications include DAC signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) 103dB and total harmonic distortion The total harmonic distortion, or THD, of a signal is a measurement of the harmonic distortion present and is defined as the ratio of the sum of the powers of all harmonic components to the power of the fundamental.  (THD) -90dB, both 'A' weighted at 48kHz.

Price and Availability

The WM8521 is available in a 14-pin SOIC package priced at $0.97 (U.S.) in quantities of 10,000.
