Martha Chainey is no Christie Love. She is however, an ex-show girl who packs a pistol and tussles with the mob. Chainey is the protagonist in Phillips' swift moving tale about a woman who is chosen to deliver $7 million dollars from a Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  casino to a mysterious address in California.

Before making the drop, Chainey is robbed by a group of masked thugs. Everyone is gunned down, except her and Casino owners Frank and Victoria DeGault, who, having entrusted Chainey to deliver the money, are the first ones to threaten her if she is unable to find the thieves and recover the loot. The rest of the novel propels and spirals its way through Chainey's high-action efforts to recover the cash.

Phillips is still maturing as a mystery and suspense writer and sometimes his book is overly simplistic sim·plism

Unfortunately, High Hand, falls short in its attempt to maintain the attention and interest of readers even as he provides a suspenseful, gripping and exciting story in which this sophisticated and intelligent heroine can really let loose.
