Hiding in plain sight: the events leading up to Lance Bass's coming-out in People.


1996: Boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman Louis Jay Pearlman (born June 19 1954, Flushing, Queens, New York, U.S.) was a manager for several boy bands including the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync and US5. He is now being held on charges of running one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in United States history after being on the run  creates 'N Sync. Lance remains mum about his sexuality, fearing it might damage the band.

March 21, 2000: 'N Sync reaches its apex when the CD No Strings Attached sells 2.4 million copies in its first week, setting a sales record. Monster success pushes Lance deeper into the closet.

May 2001: Michael Musto Michael Musto is an American Manhattan-based writer who began his career at The Village Voice, where he writes the weekly La Dolce Musto celebrity and gossip column. He is an Italian American and a graduate of Columbia University.  asks bandmate Chris Kirkpatrick Christopher Alan Kirkpatrick (born October 17, 1971) is an American singer and voice actor who is best known as the founding member of the pop group 'N Sync. Summer 2001: In a joint promotion with McDonald's, 'N Sync and Britney Spears film a commercial with her and the boys playing spin the bottle. Bass spins, sprays breath freshener into his mouth, and the bottle lands on a less-than-thrilled Justin Timberlake.

November 4, 2002: Justin Timberlake releases a smash solo album, Justified, ensuring that 'N Sync will not be reuniting in the near future and cracking open the door to Bass's closet.

August 10, 2005: Bass appears on Bravo's Kathy Griffin Kathy Griffin (born November 4 1960) is an Emmy Award-winning American stand-up comedienne, producer, and actress. She has also been a voice actress and a red carpet commentator. Griffin is a self-proclaimed "D-list celebrity. : My Life on the D-List when the comedian is hosting "gay game night" at her house. Bass is always shown sitting next to a female guest.

April 10, 2006: PerezHilton.com first reports that Bass is dating openly gay Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl Reichen Lehmkuhl, (born Richard Allen Lehmkuhl on December 26, 1973), is an American former reality show winner, male model, and actor. He is arguably best known as a winner of the fourth season of the reality game show The Amazing Race , then runs photos of the two wearing one another's shirts and pants.

June 7, 2006: Bass appears on Gameshow Marathon dressed as a giant banana. How gay is that?

July 4, 2006: Bass and Lehmkuhl are spotted together at a gay bar in Provincetown, Mass. The New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Post's Page Six and ABCNews.com report the sighting without outing Bass.

July 26, 2006: Bass's People magazine coming out interview is previewed on People.com. He confirms that he is involved in a "very stable" relationship with Lehmkuhl.
