OBY BERRY INTERVIEW

by Joe Hammeke

How long has the Kanis bowl been around?

Since 1987. Some local skaters made a trip out to California and rode a pool out there. They made up some plans to build a replica back here in Little Rock. It was supposed to be an eight-foot deep bowl with a waterfall and shallow end. They gave the plans to this construction crew, and the crew was like, "Aw hell, we know how to build a pool." And this is what we got. Not even close to the plans. The coping sticks way out; they made it like that on purpose. "You boys aren't gonna be able to do those aerials in there, are you?" The city of Little Rock has been quoted as saying it's their "best and worst mistake ever." No one here really skates it.

How did Dreamland come about to build the new park here?

I lived in south Arkansas South Arkansas is the greater area in Arkansas that encompasses the lower 15 counties of the state, with Union County being the most predominate. History
In the 1920s, nationwide attention focused on South Arkansas when the Smackover field was ranked first among the

, Bob Rose and Steven Nawojezyk, of Bangin" in Little Rock fame. Steven was actually responsible for a lot of the funding of the new park. The city has torn the downtown park out to make room for other things. I was familiar with Skateoregon.com, and had been following the Burnside park Burnside Park could refer to:

  • Burnside Park, Providence, a small park in downtown Providence, Rhode Island.
since I was 15. I thought that a concrete park would be best. I thought Dreamland would be the best. When it came down to it, American Ramp Company, ARC, these prefab guys, showed up in suits and ties. They claimed that they could build a better park cheaper that could be easily removed once the city was over it. Dreamland was supposed to get the bid but didn't. The people at Sleestak.net heard about this and started emailing the mayor. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

How did the guys from Dreamland get along with all you rednecks?

They did just fine. You would have to ask them. They hung out with John Paul The name John Paul might refer to: Full name

What does it mean if you back into the parking stall at Kanis bowl?

You gotta park backwards so the gay men know you're available, The new park is 10,000 square feet and four-inches thick. How many yards of concrete did it take to make the park?

Well it's six-inches thick, so I'd have to convert that. I'm not a mathematician. I teach students, but I'd have to write this one out. It's a lot of concrete, I can tell you that.
