Until now, CD writers (aka CD-Recorders) were bundled with low-level utility software ("premastering") that copied an image of your PC files to a CD-ROM. The files could only be retrieved using DOS "dir" or some file manager. Storing thousands of files in hundreds of directories on a CD-ROM made it difficult at best to retrieve a file or set of files. When CDs made this way were mounted on LANs, the file retrieval problem was exaggerated even further.
