Hewlett-Packard Joins Rational to Submit Proposal to Object Management Group For Industry-Standard Modeling Language.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 1996--Rational Software Corporation today announced that Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) is collaborating with Rational to produce the Unified Modeling Language See UML.

(language) Unified Modeling Language - (UML) A non-proprietary, third generation modelling language. The Unified Modeling Language is an open method used to specify, visualise, construct and document the artifacts of an object-oriented software-intensive system
(UML (Unified Modeling Language) An object-oriented analysis and design language from the Object Management Group (OMG). Many design methodologies for describing object-oriented systems were developed in the late 1980s. ), a graphical object-modeling language developed at Rational.

The companies plan to submit the UML as a joint proposal on standard object models and notation to the Object Management Group (OMG (1) See Object Management Group.

) in response to the OMG's recently issued Object Analysis and Design Request for Proposal. If accepted as a standard, the proposal is expected to remedy the current fragmentation of object modeling techniques in the marketplace.

The proposal is expected to draw upon both companies' experience with object-oriented technologies. It will be based on the UML, which represents an expansion of the earlier Unified Method developed by Rational, with significant contributions from HP(R) Fusion. Rational has been actively soliciting customer feedback and industry involvement to refine the proposal and earlier this month published an addendum to its original draft.

"A standard modeling language will accelerate the rate of adoption of object technology," said Mike Devlin Mike Devlin may be a reference to:

, chairman at Rational. "With the addition of HP's expertise in object methods, we will be able to propose a single modeling language that will eliminate confusion in the marketplace."

"Standard semantics and a standard object modeling notation are key enablers for achieving large-scale software reuse at the design level," said Dr. Mary Loomis, chair of the OMG Object Analysis and Design task force and director of the Software Technology Laboratory at HP Labs. "By participating in this joint submission, we hope to accelerate the consolidation that already is taking place in the object-oriented marketplace and to hasten the adoption of both standard semantics and a standard notation that all of our customers can use."

The joint proposal will be presented to the OMG at the end of this year for consideration as a standard. The OMG is accepting proposals through January 1997 and is expected to make a decision next spring. The OMG, of Framingham, Massachusetts, is a consortium of vendors that are jointly developing a set of standards for distributed object technologies.
