Herzog & de Meuron: museum, Zaragoza, Spain.

for this museum were relatively modest. In view of its scale, national significance and remote location, the architects consolidated their extensive experience working with galleries and artists around the world to focus on the specific qualities of this collection, this group of buildings and this particular place; their principal priority being to create and programme a unique whole that would only be sustainable in and for Zaragoza. Working within two courtyard buildings built in 1908, the architects proposed four new anchor rooms that break into the existing configuration. This apparently violent act destroys part of the existing structure, disrupting its historical continuity and spatial configuration. It is, however, a positive liberating lib·er·ate

act, opening up new perspectives and adding a new layer of history. The four anchor rooms represent reconstructions of interiors from Goya's work, giving visitors the opportunity to experience for themselves rooms that Goya painted. As interpretations, however, they will not mimic the detail of Goya's interiors. Refined and reduced, only their scale and proportion will be replicated, and materially they will use the same solid and smooth light grey brick used in the facades of the Escuela and the Museum.
