Herbert awarded projects for construction in Prague.

Continuing one of its busiest stretches in recent memory, Herbert Construction (UK) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manhattan-based Herbert Construction Company, has been awarded contracts to provide construction management services for two major redevelopment projects in Prague.

According to Herbert's London-based managing director, David Horowitz, the company will oversee construction of a new dppository for the Czech National Library at Hostivar and rebuild the Alfa Building in Wenceslas Square. Herbert's Czech-based office has already begun pre-construction services for both projects on behalf of its client, The Gloswood Investment Group of New York.

The Czech National Library's present depository is located in the historic Nementinum in the city's old town, but the aging building can no longer provide suitable storage facilities and environmental conditions for the four million books which comprise the nation's archives.

The new premises at Hostivar, in the eastern suburbs of Prague, is an industrial building which will be altered to provide modern storage conditions in a controlled environment, together with all necessary treatment rooms, workshops and administrative offices.

Architects for the project is the New Jersey-based Hiller Group, in association with ADNS from Prague. Mechanical & electrical services will be designed by Jaros Baum & Bolles, of New York.

Considered an excellent example of modernist architecture, the landmarked ALFA Building contains the Semafor Theatre, which will be reopened after redevelopment work is completed. The new building will contain four levels of retail shopping and six levels of modern office space. Architects for the project are A.R.A. of Prague and New York.
