London, city (1991 pop. 303,165), SE Ont., Canada, on the Thames River. The site was chosen in 1792 by Governor Simcoe to be the capital of Upper Canada, but York was made capital instead. London was settled in 1826.
 -- Ever since the Church of England Church of England: see England, Church of.  began ordaining women as priests 10 years ago, the question of whether women would be allowed to become bishops has lingered.

This year a compromise has been proposed that would allow women bishops, but parishes opposed to the idea could opt out of a female bishop's jurisdiction. Such parishes would remain part of their own geographic diocese DIOCESE, eccl. law. The district over which a bishop exercises his spiritual functions. 1 B1. Com. 111.  but answer to an alternate, male bishop on most matters.
