LONDON -- Ever since the Church of England began ordaining women as priests 10 years ago, the question of whether women would be allowed to become bishops has lingered.

This year a compromise has been proposed that would allow women bishops, but parishes opposed to the idea could opt out of a female bishop's jurisdiction. Such parishes would remain part of their own geographic diocese but answer to an alternate, male bishop on most matters.
