Her faith in Texas: it's difficult to be a liberal gay church in Dallas, says Cathedral of Hope pastor Jo Hudson, but she's happy to take on the challenge.

Lesbian pastor Jo Hudson was "awed" to be selected as leader of the nation's largest and most prominent gay church. On March 20 she became the first female pastor in the 35-year history of the Cathedral of Hope Cathedral of Hope may refer to:
  • Cathedral of Hope (Dallas), Texas (United Church of Christ, formerly Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches)
  • Cathedral of Hope (Pittsburgh) (East Liberty Presbyterian Church), Pennsylvania (Presbyterian Church USA)
in Dallas, which is now the largest church in Texas with a female leader.

Hudson, who came to the cathedral from the United Church of Christ United Church of Christ, American Protestant denomination formed in 1957 by a merger of the General Council of Congregational Christian Churches (see Congregationalism) and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. , succeeded the church's longtime pastor Michael Piazza, who resigned in 2003 amid a high-profile split from the predominantly gay Metropolitan Community Churches. Claiming some 3,500 local members, plus an additional 10,000 who tune in to the church's weekly online ministry, the Cathedral of Hope has ambitious plans to build a huge new Philip Johnson-designed cathedral and to expand its reach into the conservative community surrounding it.

Hudson, who is single and has no children, recently spoke to The Advocate about her new job.

Congratulations.

Thank you. It's wonderful to be in a city with so many people of liberal Christian thought and GLBT GLBT Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered  people of faith together in this congregation.

I'm surprised you're the first female pastor of the Cathedral of Hope.

The church has only had three or four pastors in its history, and Michael Piazza was pastor for 17 years, so it's not so unusual.

How does being a lesbian inform your role as pastor?

for quite a while. When you come out and have to let go of all the dreams you may have had for yourself, you understand what it is to be alone and afraid. That experience helped me be more compassionate, more aware. It informs how I read scripture and how I understand God.

How do you deal with the conservative evangelicals in Texas?

It's not easy to proclaim yourself a liberal Christian church in any part of the country right now, but especially in this part of the country. We focus on our faith. They say you cannot be gay and Christian, and we show that you can. This church has made a huge difference as a liberal voice in Dallas.

How does the church serve gay people?

Many churches open their doors to our community, but they say, "We're going to try to change you." We say, "Come and live the fullness of yourself." Every week we open our doors, and 1,500 people come to worship. That alone is an amazing a·maze

There has been a lot of talk about your church going "mainstream."

Our primary outreach is to the GLBT community. And I want to go a step further and say that it's an outreach to the whole city of Dallas. There are many straight people who want to be part of our faith community. I really do think it's the calling of this congregation to try hard to be a church that has, as we call it, "an extravagant welcome."

Is that why the cathedral left the MCC (The Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, Austin, TX) The first high-tech research and development consortium in the U.S., created in 1982 by leading companies within the electronics industry. ?

The leadership of the church got to a place where they felt that the direction the church was being called was not where the denomination Denomination

was going. So they felt it was best to ask the congregation what it wanted. And the congregation did vote [to split].

So what does the future hold for gay-focused churches in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. ?

Churches that focus on GLBT people have greatly diversified. Our local gay paper has 26 churches advertising to GLBT people. At Cathedral of Hope we're seeing more heterosexual people, traditional and nontraditional families, mixed-race and single-parent families because this is the kind of church they want to be involved in and raise their children in.

Tell us about the new cathedral.

We want a church that is a visible presence, not just in Dallas but for the whole world. The cathedral will rise up 11 stories--as tall as St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:
