Rick Henson, 49, officially entered the House District 12 race Wednesday after filing preliminary campaign papers several weeks ago.

"I still tend to call myself a carpenter since that was the first part of my life and I can't quite hang up the bag," he said.

Henson will face Elizabeth Terry Beyer in the May primary, the only other Democrat to file for the office so far. The deadline to file is March 12.

Republican Norm Fox also has filed for his party's primary in House District 12.

Henson said he was running for the Legislature because he wanted to work to maintain adequate funding for public schools as well as help businesses and families deal with spiraling health care and utility costs. He said he also wanted to make sure Gov. John Kitzhaber's work to restore natural habitat continues, in balance with the need to "bring in quality jobs to the community."

Henson's public service includes serving as chairman of the Lane Regional Workforce Quality Council, which focused on community development and work force transition issues for dislocated dis·lo·cate

Henson enters the race after being one of three nominees to fill the vacancy created in the House when Springfield Democrat Bill Morrisette resigned to accept an appointment to the Senate.
