Fifteen years after his death, Henry Moore's reputation still bobs like a cork on the sea of twentieth-century art. Innovator or magpie magpie, common name for certain birds of the family Corvidae (crows and jays). The black-billed magpie, Pica pica, of W North America has iridescent black plumage, white wing patches and abdomen, and a long wedge-shaped tail. It is altogether about 20 in. (50 cm) long. Magpies build large, domed nests in trees. Nest-building is part of courtship. The female alone incubates the eggs.? Last of the European greats or a grandiose bore in his later years? Do the fractured females and blown-up plaza monuments surpass his wartime shelter drawings? The right collection of Moores-the ones, for instance, at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto-can lift your spirits and reaffirm your belief in him. If the Dallas retrospective is severe in its selection and avoids the late, made-to-measure "masterpieces," the result will provide a similar uplift. Feb. 25-May 27; California Palace of the Legion of Honor Legion of Honor: see decorations, civil and military., San Francisco, June 24-Sept. 16; National Gallery National Gallery, London, one of the permanent national art collections of Great Britain. Its building, in Greek style, stands in Trafalgar Square. It was designed and erected (1832–38) by William Wilkins and was shared for 30 years with the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1876 a new wing was added, designed by E. M. Barry. The nucleus of the collection was formed in 1824 with 38 pictures from J. J. Angerstein's collection. of Art, Washington, DC, Oct. 14, 2001- Jan. 13, 2002.
