Hemispherx Biopharma and its lead offerings, the experimental immunostimulants Ampligen(R) and Alferon, have the potential to play a key role in this biodefense environment. The diversity of currently identified biological agents of threat, the challenge associated with mass vaccination against every potential threat agent, and the uncertainty of future biological threat require a flexible bio-defense strategy based on broad-spectrum post-exposure therapeutics and rapid reaction capabilities for an immediate response. A layered approach of mounting a broad-spectrum first line of countermeasures, followed by specific therapeutics once the threat agent is identified, will maximize the country's chances of success in countering the threat. Ampligen(R), Alferon and Alferon LDO (Low Dose Oral) are promising options in this broad-spectrum biodefense strategy.

In the current issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases (Vol.12, No.5, May 2006), members of the National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases (George Mason University Named after American revolutionary, patriot and founding father George Mason, the university was founded as a branch of the University of Virginia in 1957 and became an independent institution in 1972. ) propose that studies begin immediately to explore the potential of interferons (IFNs) to prevent infections and reduce deaths caused by avian influenza avian influenza: see influenza.  viruses in animal models and humans. The independent researchers, supported by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency Defense Advanced Research Project Agency - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency  (a U.S. government entity), identify five medications potentially capable of preventing infections caused by viral bioweapons and other diseases, two of which are Alferon LDO and Ampligen(R). (One of the co-authors, Dr. Ken Alibek brings a unique perspective to this issue: He defected to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1992 after serving as Deputy Director of that country's biological weapons program for more than 20 years, and has since served as a consultant to numerous U.S. government agencies dealing with medical microbiology, biological weapons defense, and biological weapons nonproliferation non·pro·lif·er·a·tion

.)

During his presentation, Dr. Carter will focus on Hemispherx Biopharma's global clinical and animal studies that are being conducted with experimental immunostimulants Ampligen(R) and Alferon LDO for potential treatment against avian influenza. The studies, conducted in Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and the United States The United States and Canada share a unique legal relationship. Hemispherx Biopharma also recently announced that it has completed the clinical protocol for an immunopotentiation trial of seasonal influenza vaccinations in Australia designed to increase vaccine dosage supply and increase cross-protection.

Based on the range and success of Hemispherx's clinical initiatives and potential market opportunities, a recent independent research report by Smallcap.us concluded that, "Hemispherx Biopharma is one of the most undervalued Undervalued
