) announced today that its collaborative research partners in Japan, headed by Dr. Hideki Hasegawa, M.D., Ph.D., will present new data on augmentation of influenza vaccines using Hemispherx's Vaccine Enhancement Drug platform.

Influenza vaccines, both seasonal and avian flu-specific, share certain limitations which researchers hope may be overcome by vaccine-enhancing agents, such as Hemispherx's Ampligen[R], an experimental therapeutic. Two of the main limitations faced by influenza vaccines are: 1) Poor host immune response immune response

An integrated bodily response to an antigen, especially one mediated by lymphocytes and involving recognition of antigens by specific antibodies or previously sensitized lymphocytes.
(especially in individuals over 60 years of age), including marginal immune response in humans that "wears off" quickly without periodic boosting by means of additional vaccine inoculations, and 2) Limited vaccine supplies that it may be feasible to augment by co-administering vaccine enhancers such as Ampligen[R].

Dr. Hasegawa's tests have involved animals treated by various routes with Ampligen[R] (intramuscular intramuscular /in·tra·mus·cu·lar/ (-mus´ku-ler) within the muscular substance.
