Hekimian Builds New CopperMax Units for Outside Plant Environment; Unique Hardened Testing Platform Delivers Service Validation and Assurance at Remote Terminals.

Business Editors/Hi-Tech Writers

ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000

Hekimian today announced that it will offer a unique, environmentally hardened testing platform for use by service providers in remote terminals, enabling service providers for the first time to move network-based services, like digital subscriber line See DSL.

(communications, protocol) Digital Subscriber Line - (DSL, or Digital Subscriber Loop, xDSL - see below) A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and

With enhanced versions of Hekimian's CopperMax/A and CopperMax/RT test units, service providers will now be able to perform service validation and maintenance tests on copper pairs being delivered by digital loop carrier In telephone communications, a technology that increases the number of channels in the local loop by converting analog signals to digital and multiplexing them back to the end office.  (DLC (1) (Data Link Control) See data link and OSI.

The environmentally hardened CopperMax(TM) units have the physical protections required to operate safely in an outside-plant environment, with the Hekimian access and testing capabilities that have become the industry standard for DSL service assurance.

Service providers can continue to gain access to Hekimian's real time domain reflectometer (hardware, networking) Time Domain Reflectometer - (TDR) An electronic device for detecting and locating short- or open-circuits in an Ethernet cable. TDRs can also measure how the characteristic impedance of a line varies along its length.  (TDR TDR - time domain reflectometer ) and spectrum analysis functions that enable single ended testing, reduce truck rolls, and lower deployment costs.

"Telecom service providers are looking to rapidly and reliably provide high speed data services to end-users, while minimizing costs and saving resources," said Des Wilson, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Hekimian. "Hekimian's CopperMax/A and CopperMax/RT are long-awaited solutions for that mission, and we are glad to give our customers the tools they need to deliver DSL into homes quickly and effectively."

While several major service providers have established initiatives to overcome the distance limitations of xDSL services by placing DLCs and DSLAMs in neighborhoods, buildings, and in other controlled environments outside of the central office, services delivered to the remote terminal still require extensive wideband testing of the loop and of the data network to confirm active service.

Hekimian's environmentally protected versions of the CopperMax/A and CopperMax/RT extend service validation and management to the remote site - capabilities previously only available from the central office.

The new CopperMax/RT communicates to metallic test access units (MTAU MTAU Metallic Test Access Unit

It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. , DLC, or standalone units such as the CopperMax/A. Having the test access included in the DSLAM or DLC can reduce the overall footprint and efficiently utilize the limited space available at the remote terminal.

The new CopperMax/A is environmentally protected for remote terminal sites in which the DSLAM or DLC does not have a MTAU capability. The new CopperMax/A is a space-efficient test access system that provides up to 500 two-wire access points and takes up just over one foot of vertical space.

Similar to the central office version of the CopperMax/A, the new version supports integrated splitters and line restoration.
