Heineken N.V. announces bottle recall.

The Dutch brewery Heineken NV began recalling thousands of beer bottles in eight countries last week, fearing that they may contain glass splinters.

The splinters were found during a routine check of 10-oz. bottles at the brewery.

The eight markets affected by the recall are Austria, Great Britain, Finland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Sweden and Prince Edward Island in Canada. The recall does not affect any bottles in the U.S.

Heineken says the fault may lie with a new light-weight bottle-making process, and the brewer says it holds the manufacturer of the bottles responsible. The bottles were made by a unit of the French food conglomerate BSN S.A.

A BSN spokesperson said that 17 million bottles are being recalled, and that 80% of those are already out of circulation. The spokesperson said that glass shards may be found in about 1% of the bottles.

BSN attributed the problem to incompatible bottle caps, and said that any legal damages that may result from the affair will be covered by insurance.

Two other Dutch brewers using the BSN bottles have also announced bottle recalls.

The brewer Bavaria has recalled 4.5 million bottles and the brewer Oranjeboom has made an unspecified number of recalls.
