Heikkinen & Komonen: prototypical prefabricated house, Finland.Finnish savoir faire in the area of timber prefabrication prefabrication, in architectural construction, a technique whereby large units of a building are produced in factories to be assembled, ready-made, on the building site. The technique permits the speedy erection of very large structures. makes for economical, if slightly functional, solutions to the provision of single family houses. This latest project by Heikkinen & Komonen adds a clear architectural dimension to the off-the-peg house market. In collaboration with manufacturer Kannustalo, it consolidates and develops an earlier design for the same company undertaken some six years ago. To manufacture (a building or section of a building, for example) in advance, especially in standard sections that can be easily shipped and family house suitable for an urban environment. To meet market demands, this new design is around 200sqm, larger than the original prototype which was only 150sqm. The programme, however, is the same: a modern house capable of being built by averagely skilled labourers in a few weeks. The architectural approach is also similar. Rooms are grouped around a tall, open plan living area focused on a kitchen stove stove, device used for heating or for cooking food. The stove was long regarded as a cooking device supplementary to the fireplace, near which it stood; its stovepipe led into the fireplace chimney. It was not until about the middle of the 19th cent. , a modern version of the traditional hearth hearth symbol of home life. [Folklore: Jobes, 738] See : Domesticity . The prefabricated timber units that comprise the house's kit of parts are manufactured and surface finished at the factory and assembled on site. C. S.
