Heavy plastic compounds weigh in against metal.


New heavyweight compounds from Clariant Specialty Compounding, Millington, Md., are alternatives to metal in applications where weight and other metal-like characteristics are desired. Clariant incorporates fillers like tungsten, barium sulfate, and bismuth bismuth (bĭz`məth) [Ger. Weisse Masse=white mass], metallic chemical element; symbol Bi; at. no. 83; at. wt. 208.9804; m.p. 271.3°C;; b.p. about 1,560°C;; sp. gr. 9.75 at 20°C;; valence +3 or +5.  in a range of thermoplastics including nylon 6 and 66, PP, ABS, PBT PBT Provider Backbone Transport (networking technology adding determinism to ethernet)
