Hearty Boys.Unlike the case with their super-sleuthing namesakes, there is no mystery surrounding Chicago's Hearty Boys, whose careers are piping hot after winning the Food Network's The Next Food Network Star. The culinary couple, Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh, were awarded their own Food Network series, Party Line With Steve and Dan, which premiered in fall 2005. The duo also runs HB: A Hearty Boys Spot (3404 N. Halsted St., 773-244-9866), a cozy See COSE. eatery in the heart of Chicago's Boys Town. "We are known for comfort foods in a warm setting with great service," says McDonagh of the burgeoning bistro, which was renovated in spring 2005. The cuisine is a fusion of international dishes. "We tend to bring a lot of flavors back with us from our travels," confesses McDonagh. Drop in and savor the restaurant's best seller, a veal veal, flesh of a calf from two to three months old weighing usually less than 300 lb (135 kg). The locomotion of the veal calves is often restricted, and they are fed a real or synthetic milk that is high in protein and low in iron; this produces the desired chop on garlic polenta po·len·ta n.
