Heard on NRPAnet. (Tip-Off).

Has your park and recreation district or city department been able to use Community Development Block Grant (CDBG CDBG Community Development Block Grant ) monies to assist with park renovation? That question, posed by one NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association
NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY)
NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada)

member on NRPAnet, NRPA's listserv, yielded the following responses from fellow NRPA members.

"Yes, this year we used CDBG monies totaling $644,442 from a neighborhood to help purchase park land and renovate the property. The result is a .76-acre park near a school. We have also used CBDG money to renovate the landscape for a park by adding trees."

"We have used these monies for playground restoration and new development. We have made a decision to no longer use this as a source of funding for these projects. The federal requirements are too time-consuming to go through and manage.

"Yes. We have replaced playground equipment, rebuilt basketball courts, replaced drinking fountains, benches, and other park amenities ... just about everything related to park renovations."

We just completed a new neighborhood park assistance from CDBG funding. CDBG funding has been used in the past for renovation of existing facilities (community center and pool house). However, historically, the CDBG funds were used for new construction."

"Yes, we do it all the time. Recently we have a park shelter that's going into a well-established park. It's replacing shade from another area of the park."
