NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Desert Springs Hospital Desert Springs Hospital is for-profit hospital owned and operated by Universal Health Services. This 286 bed hospital is located in Paradise, Nevada. History
The hospital was founded in 1971.
, partnering with Healthways Hospital Diabetes Service, is the first in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  to earn a Certificate of Distinction for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care from the Joint Commission, the national organization accrediting healthcare organizations across the United States. Healthways supported the hospital's campaign for certification, which meets protocols established by The Joint Commission and the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  providing better outcomes for patients with diabetes.

"Achieving advanced certification demonstrates a commitment by Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center to promoting safe quality care. Through systematic monitoring of all diabetic patients, outcomes can be improved. This will lead to a better quality of life for diabetic patients," said Jean Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., Executive Director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission.

Healthways supported the hospital by providing a program outlining the steps for achieving the award, training tools and supporting the Desert Springs Diabetes Program Director in monthly conference calls reviewing the hospital's progress. Healthways is currently working with two additional hospitals on achieving certification.

"Healthways is proud to have helped Desert Springs through this very important, but very vigorous, certification process," said Joanne Westerfield, vice president, account management, Healthways Hospital Diabetes Services. "There are so many variables in diabetes care. People with diabetes have told us they wish they could check their diabetes at the door when admitted to a hospital because standards of care Standards of care are medical or psychological treatment guidelines, and can be general or specific. They specify appropriate treatment protocols based on scientific evidence, and collaboration between medical and/or psychological professionals involved in the treatment of a given  can vary so widely even within one hospital. This certification reflects that Desert Springs has accomplished The Joint Commission's standards to improve the care of people with diabetes, and that every employee of the hospital possesses at least a fundamental knowledge of the disease and its basic care."

Spreading diabetes education beyond nurses will affect the quality of care for people with diabetes and improve outcomes. For example, an aid helping with a bath will know to look for skin breakdowns, or pay special attention to the feet of a patient with diabetes. An employee passing meal trays will realize the importance of timely food delivery - understanding that diabetic patients may experience a negative event if the food is either too early or too late. "We sought certification for our organization because we want to demonstrate our commitment to patients' safety and quality care," said Sam Kaufman, CEO/Managing Director Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center. "We view obtaining Joint Commission certification as another step toward achieving excellence."
