The article "Providing Affordable Healthcare" (December 25, 2006 issue), about primary-care clinics where patients pay for the required service at the time of service, is a great article. I have been telling many physician and nurse practitioner nurse practitioner

friends of mine that it is a viable option and a good one at that. But the article failed to mention that this option is often available to nurse practitioners (NP), who can be primary-care providers. NP's can own their own practice and care for patients independently in many states. NP's provide diagnoses, symptom symptom /symp·tom/ (simp´tom) any subjective evidence of disease or of a patient's condition, i.e., such evidence as perceived by the patient; a change in a patient's condition indicative of some bodily or mental state.  management, and prescriptions if needed, and they can do minor procedures.

The article also failed to address the fact that medicine in America needs to change in the way we approach our patients. Many diseases are related to nutrition and/or life-style issues. Modern medicine does not address many lifestyle issues (except smoking) due to time constraints In law, time constraints are placed on certain actions and filings in the interest of speedy justice, and additionally to prevent the evasion of the ends of justice by waiting until a matter is moot.  and beliefs. The entire system is one of the patient complaining and the physician responding by giving a prescription medication. The majority of prescription medications address symptoms and not the root cause of a complaint.
